We Build Furniture the Way It Was Meant to Be Built

In 1987, our founder William Harrington opened a small workshop in the Cotswolds with a simple belief: furniture should outlive the people who make it. Nearly four decades later, that belief shapes every piece we create.

The Beginning

A Workshop Born From Frustration

William spent fifteen years restoring antique furniture before starting Oak Atone. He watched as clients brought in pieces their grandparents had bought — solid, dependable furniture that had served multiple generations.

Then he watched the same clients struggle with modern furniture that fell apart within years. The contrast was stark. The old methods worked. The new methods didn't.

So he decided to bring the old methods back.

The Craft

Techniques That Time Has Tested

We use mortise and tenon joints — the same joints you'll find in medieval buildings still standing today. We select timber for grain pattern and structural integrity, not just appearance.

Every surface is hand-finished with natural oils that protect the wood while allowing it to breathe. These finishes age beautifully, developing character rather than degrading.

This approach takes longer. It costs more. But it produces furniture that will still be in use a century from now.

Sustainability

All our oak comes from managed British forests. For every tree harvested, multiple saplings are planted. Our furniture doesn't contribute to deforestation — and because it lasts, it doesn't contribute to landfill either.

Transparency

We'll tell you exactly what goes into your piece, how long it will take, and what it will cost. No hidden fees. No surprise delays. If something changes, you'll know before we proceed.

Legacy

We don't build furniture for now. We build it for your children, and their children after them. Every piece carries our workshop stamp — a mark of authenticity for generations to come.

"The desk William built for my father in 1992 sits in my office now. Thirty-two years of daily use, and it's as solid as the day it arrived. That's the kind of furniture Oak Atone makes."
